Christening is the old English word for baptism, the event that marks a person’s entry into the church and a wonderful new relationship with God. It’s a significant milestone representing the beginning of a lifelong journey of faith.
People of any age can be baptised if they wish to be part of God’s family and want to follow his son, Jesus Christ. The rite of baptism involves making a commitment to live in a way that honours God and people around us and, as a sign of this new way, the person is immersed in water or symbolically doused.
The Church of England holds to the ancient tradition of baptising infants. As a small child is not able to make its own promises of commitment, godparents make these on their behalf and publicly declare that they will nurture the child’s faith and guide them in making right choices.
